Introduction from our President
Welcome to our first Chamber newsletter.
I am very excited at the enthusiasm of the BNCC executive committee and the plans now in place for the upcoming year. The previous 12 months have seen a great number of advancements in the way the Chamber is moving forward and providing services to our Members. We are committed to ensuring the Chamber provides all the support mechanisms necessary for the business people of the North Brisbane corridor to prosper and grow.

BNCC Expands into the Gateway and Brisbane Airport Precinct
Background
The Gateway Chamber of Commerce grew from the expansion of the Albion Chamber of Commerce in the late ‘90s. The first President was John Harrison and his father's business, Bill Harrison Holden, was at the Albion Fiveways where McDonalds now stands. The Chamber grew quickly and by 1999 had nearly 200 members. David Ross became the next President and instituted the Lord Mayor’s Office as Patron of the Chamber. From that point on the Chamber held its annual Lord Mayor's Breakfast, usually in winter at the Doomben race track. These breakfasts attracted up to 250 people each year. Because The Gateway Bridge and Brisbane Airport are in the Chamber’s area, a logo was designed featuring a 747 flying over the Gateway Bridge.
The big event each year was the Racecourse Road Festival which was organised and run by the Chamber. All profits made were returned to charities like the Children's Hospital Foundation.
The Hub’s IWD Luncheon supports local Brisbane Charities
The Women’s Division of the Brisbane
North Chamber of Commerce known as The Hub held its annual
International Women’s Day luncheon on Friday 5 March 2010 at Kedron
Wavell Services Club’s Community Centre. This year’s International
Women’s Day theme is Women Leading the Way and The Hub’s guest speaker
Lady Mayoress Lisa Newman certainly demonstrated to attendees how we
can all lead the way in supporting the many needs of Brisbane’s
homeless and disadvantaged. We were appalled to learn that the largest
group of homeless people in Brisbane are babies aged 1 – 4 and that
many broken families are living with friends in rooms or in their cars
and not as a family unit which so many of us take for granted.
